When At First It Is Quiet

the word "but"
should never come after an
"I love you" nor, should it come
before it.

"I love you"
should be its very own,
significant event unfurling loudly
and unabashed
like lightning, down
the center of a giant oak,
in a field, when at
first it is quiet,
then it is not.
